Introduction to Birds of the South Downs, Seven Sisters Country Park (22/05/25) Thursday, 22nd May 2025 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Tutor: Jack Thompson, Wilder Communities Officer for Sussex Wildlife Trust

Seven Sisters Country Park is an iconic landscape. Its meandering river valley and open chalk grassland play host to a number of resident and migratory bird species. This beginner’s course will introduce you to the wonders of Sussex birds and how to get started with some casual birdwatching.

The afternoon will start in the historic Pump Barn, Exeat, with a presentation looking at some of the birds you’re likely to see around the South Downs, including grassland, farmland, and woodland birds. We’ll discuss everything from Skylarks and Meadow Pipits to Barn Swallow, Wheatears and Yellowhammer. This will be followed by a look at some basic survey techniques and how you can get involved with citizen science to help monitor how birds are faring across Sussex.

For the second part of the course, we will head out into the country park for some field practice of bird ID and surveying.
